Unknown to him, Syrian-Canadian Adib Abdul-Kareem&#39;s eldest daughter Muna, a photographer, has traveled to his homeland to find out more about her father,he had never talked about his Syrian past to his family. He does learn about her travels only because she has gone missing in Damascus, most of her belongings still in her hotel room. Adib decides to head back to Damascus to find her, and enlists the help of his old girlfriend Fatima, a Canadian diplomat named Paul, and an old colleague Sayid to find Muna while he&#39;s in Damascus, some who seem to know more about Muna&#39;s disappearance than they initially let on to Adib. Adib does this all at his own personal riskhe used to work in the Syrian military secret service, and was convicted in absentia and sentenced to death for purportedly being an Israeli spy. Adib, who managed to get back into Syria on an illegal visa with Fatima&#39;s help, has to uncover why Muna has gone missing and if it has anything to do with his Syrian past. He also has to reconcile with Fatima, who long felt abandoned by Adib when he left the country thirty years ago. I&#39;m somewhat baffled by the ratings here. This is clearly not an extreme film, yet there are so many 10s. And 1s.<br/><br/>It is a good enough film. It&#39;s a sort of detective action movie, involving a Canadian returning to his native Syria to rescue his daughter who is held captive because of something in his past. It kept my attention the whole time (even though I really should have been at home asleep).<br/><br/>Some changes I would have made if I had no constraints (a) replace the TV actors with unknowns, and (b) shoot in the mid-east. It&#39;s worth delaying the film to make it the best it can be.<br/><br/>In summary, it&#39;s a competent telling of the &quot;good but flawed Western hero goes to bad non-Western country to rescue lost family member&quot; story. If you want a Canada-Syria version of that story, then this may be that film. I&#39;ll have to leave it for others to comment on how accurately Syria is portrayed,I have no idea. &quot;I&#39;m not the same man you chased away all those years ago. When he meets people from his past he is forced not only to confront his earlier life consequences but also find his daughter before its too late. This is a movie that is good, fast moving and worth watching, but also a little generic. There really isn&#39;t much to say about this one. Father finds out his daughter is missing, he is forced to seek help from those he has had previous problems with, encounters resistance. I did like the movie and I do think it&#39;s worth watching and while it is pretty tense I found that the daughter storyline seemed to have gotten lost in the jumble of what was going on. When you watch that will make sense. Overall, a movie that is good and well worth checking out but it is a tad generic. I give it a B. Waiting for Inescapable to finally reach its unearned, sentimental conclusion is a tiresome experience, but seeing Tomei submit to its badness is several measures worse.
